On 27 November 1891, at a meeting of the Legal Testing Commission at the Imperial Saint Petersburg University, the future leader of the world proletariat was awarded a first-degree diploma for passing the external exams in the law course. The commission found ‘very satisfactory’ his essay and written response, as well as his oral responses on various sections of law, including Roman, civil, state, and canon ones. Surprisingly, the typewritten diploma opens with the words: The bearer of this, Vladimir Ivanov Ulyanov, is of the Orthodox faith…, and the patronymic Ivanov (today would be written as Ivanovich) is crossed out and corrected. Above there is another patronymic added: Ilyin (that is, lyich).
