The death of the Titanic became legendary and was one of the largest shipwrecks in the history. At the time of its construction, it was the largest passenger liner in the world. During the first voyage, on the night of 14-15 April 1912, the ship crashed and sank after 2 hours and 40 minutes. There were 1,316 passengers and 892 crew members on board – 2,208 people in total. Only 704 of them survived. On 3 July 1916, a trial of the luxury steamship disasterwas held in London. As a result, the judges determined: ‘the loss of said ship was due to collision with an iceberg, brought about by the excessive speed at which the ship was being navigated.’ Stanley Lord, the captain of the steamship ‘California,’ who, according to experts, was located six miles from the scene of the tragedy, was subjected to moral condemnation. Caught in the most terrible crime according to the sea laws– failure to help dying people, he lived in shame until the end of his days.
It was only after Lord’s death in 1962 that it became clear that he was innocent. On the Titanic, they saw the lights of another ship – Norwegian ship ‘Samson.’ Going home with a poaching catch, it decided not to draw attention.
